A Life Story that needs to Live on

On August 8th, 2021 I lost my mom to Ovarian Cancer. It was a long battle of about 4 years in which she underwent series of chemotherapy sessions, so much so that now I have lost the count (probably 40+). In the last 1 month of her life when she was hospitalized, I would almost spend 16-18 hours of the day with her, and as doctors gave up on her and as she neared her end, I realized how unfair Life has been on her. It was at that moment that I decided that I would pen her life journey here, her story needs to live on.

Growing up, although very much interested in studies, she did not have the opportunity to complete her schooling and had to quit school in 6th standard for failing to pay the 1 Rupee School Fees. The fact that she could not complete her own education may have motivated her heavily to have us educated to the best of her ability. My dad wanted us to study in good schools and so brought us to Mumbai in the early 1990s. However, to sustain ourselves in the city of dreams he decided to leave for middle-east while leaving us under the care of my Mom's younger brother, who was himself trying to find his feet. Despite living in a completely new city, with no knowledge of either Hindi or the local Language, my mom carried on bravely and raised us well for the next few years as we would switch from one rented home to another every now and then.

Happy times!! 6 months before she was diagnosed with Cancer, Mom (in Orange) enjoying her life in her hometown
In 1997, my father had managed to save enough to buy our own home in Thane and was planning to come back too. For my Mom, it seemed like our one problem of switching homes had come to an end. However, disaster struck not long after, in Nov 1998, we lost our home after a series of buildings neighboring to ours collapsed due to faulty construction or foundation. One of those buildings had collapsed on ours which meant our building had to be demolished too. And just like that, we were back again in search of rented homes. Being just 7 years of age myself, little did I realize the magnitude of what had happened probably because my mom stood strong and did not break down at our situation.

After 3 more years of staying in rented homes, my dad had once again managed to save just enough to buy a new home in a chawl. While everyone around us including my dad was apprehensive of living in a chawl, my Mom wasn't. She had a simple philosophy - There was a school nearby, a hospital for an emergency, no problems with a water supply and more importantly we will have a home to live in and stop worrying about rents and moving from home to home, don't care what family friends or relatives would say about living in a chawl" In 2002, we moved to our new home in chawl in Airoli, 19 years later we are still living there and perhaps happy with where we live.

By 2017, I had graduated from Engineering and had taken up a steady job, and it had seemed that her days of struggles are coming to an end. My dad was thinking of taking retirement and coming back for good. However, it seemed like God wasn't done with her as in November of that year, she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. Not long ago, she had lost her youngest sister to cancer, so even when we were thinking of not telling her about her cancer she had probably figured it out herself. She showed enough fighting spirit and willingness to fight it out. An Operation and six rounds of chemo later, the reports came out good and she was declared cancer-free, However, the doctors had warned that cancer shouldn't relapse within 2 years.

Some Good days

Unfortunately for her, she relapsed just within a year. After another bout of chemotherapy, she was cleared for the 2nd time in 2019 but once again, days before nationwide covid lockdown she relapsed for the 2nd time. It was downhill ever since, although we tried everything the results never improved, and at some point, she had accepted her fate. More than her impending death she was more concerned about us and what would happen to us without her.

During her last days in the hospital, I would spend 14-16 hours a day beside her. As the doctors confirmed the inevitable, all I hoped and prayed for from god was to not make her struggle in pain. For once, I guess he listened to my prayers. Her last few days went ok, she didn't look in pain, or at least she didn't show the pain, and the evening of August 7th, she closed her eyes never to open again. She breathed her last on the morning of August 8th.

Few days before her death on her hospital bed, she had mentioned to me that she was very proud of us and that it is one of the few good things in her life. I played it down at that time but that is the only thing I remember the most. I am not sure how to end this post, been stalling this for weeks now, just didn't have the courage to write about those moments.

I hope she is in a better place now and that is all I want for her.

A Broken Heart

The day we met was just so bright,
Everything from then seemed so right.

Your cuddles and kisses made me glow,
Now their memories make me low.
All you gave me were beautiful dreams,
Which now are just my nightmare screams.

Dreams are something,
that can't always come true,
All I try and survive through.

All your love was just a lie,
When u called me your cutiepie.

I kept all your memories in a rack,
Hoping that one day you'll be back.

But now that I know you r gone,
And will Never be back till the end horizon.

All I wish for you is your happy life,
With the one whom you'll call your "wife".

My short excerpt on Experiencing the college atmosphere…. again

It was already hard....very hard….to make a decision of going back to college in pursuit of a MBA degree. It wasn't the impending studies that were worrying me, but the fact that I would be doing it after three years of finishing my engineering degree.

After the last job where I worked as a Service Engineer at Mumbai Airport for more than 17 months, I had realized that I could do better than this and that there are lots of places that I could contribute to. So I set my sights on clearing CET and CMAT and by the end of cap rounds in July 2018, I was here taking admission at VESIM. Choosing VESIM wasn't that hard a decision, while it does not parade itself as the best MBA College of the city, it is definitely among the Top 10 and has quite a decent reputation.

So it was mid-august and I was back in a college campus. To start off, it was a nervy experience, meeting new people has always been uncomfortable for me although I do get accustomed to them quickly; it's always finding the conversation starter that I struggled at. With no known faces alongside, I attended the Induction day and everything there was a surreal experience. The campus had a good vibe about it and so did the atmosphere in around the college, unlike my dull engineering college campus located at the outskirts of the city.

When it comes to making friends, what better way than complaining about something together and that’s where I made some friends too, we all had a similar distaste for the food and soon by the end of day one, I had made 5 friends. Our college soon introduced us to a unique outbound program where we were pushed to introduce our self to random fellow students, which was soon followed by bunch of Management games. While I seemed to hate this approach at first, I had started liking it within couple of hours. The group activity helped me bond with few more guys and by the end of the program, I was already beginning to settle in.

Our regular college life started with a bang as we were given a activity in the very first week in which we were divided into different teams and were told to sell about 120 bags – as much as this activity was for us to develop our communication and marketing skills, it was also about helping an NGO to market their products. And thus began my new college life, every other week College would organize a seminar or invite a guest lecturer, helping me knowing the world of business in much better way.

The different cells like Marketing cell, Finance cell, Women development cell, Sports cell, etc where students would be part of some initiatives taken by respective cell was also something of an unexpected turn for me, after all this kind of push for participation were a rare case in my previous college. But one of the cells that I was very much interested in was the BIC - Business Incubation cell, where the members were encouraged in developing their own business ideas.

The Library, the canteens, the neighboring engineering building, the atmosphere around it all brought back my engineering memories. Reminiscing those days, I realized that while I should enjoy the fun and adventures that would come across me in the next 2 years it was also important that I concentrate and keep my focus steady on why I decided to do MBA and make the best use of this second lease of college life.

Colours of life

This post is in Analogy to life through Photography, but one could still understand what it means to say, once you read it. Life is beautiful even in black and white after all its all about how you see them that creates the impression.
For some black and white is dull, for others it is a means of life that is plain simple. The different shades of the two colours can still brighten up the image.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to how you perceive things you can actually ignore the bad and concentrate on what is good. Once you do that you will see the result in how it looks good.

What is this new Blue Whale Challenge engulfing the internet?

The Blue Whale Challenge is an internet suicide game that has been allegedly linked to the deaths of several children worldwide.

A new social media phenomenon has engulfed the internet reportedly called has suicide game or ‘The blue whale challenge’, named after the beached whales that are linked to suicide. The game allegedly consists of a series of tasks assigned to players by administrators during a 50-day period, with the final challenge requiring the player to commit suicide.

Things you need to be aware of about the game:

Blue Whale is not a downloadable game, application or software. It's a social media phenomenon like ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and the Harlem Shake. It enters social media networks from secretive groups.

The challenge allegedly started in a secret group of Russian social media network ‘Vkontakte’. It is said to involve 50 challenges that includes watching horror movies and inflicting self-harm which are monitored by a curator. They are expected to take photos of them undertaking the challenge and upload them as proofs for the curator's approval. The 50th challenge of the game is to commit suicide

There are claims that over 100 teenagers have killed themselves because of the challenge but there is no evidence to suggest that the number is real.

Philipp Budeikin, a former psychology student who was expelled from his university, claimed that he invented the game. Budeikin stated that his purpose was to "clean" the society by pushing to suicide those he deemed as having no value.

The list of tasks, to be completed in 50 days, includes waking up at 4:20 A.M., climbing a crane, carving a specific phrase on the person’s own hand or arm, doing secret tasks, poking a needle to the arm or leg, standing on a bridge and roof, listening to music, and watching videos sent to the challengers by the administrator.

One of the reason, kids performing the stupid 50th challenge is a possible blackmail or a death threats to their loved ones. Ten days ago, Rakshit Tandon, a cyber security expert, got a disturbing phone call from a 13-year-old boy, who confided in him about “death threats directed towards his parents by strangers in a chat room” after the boy initially showed interest in the ‘Blue Whale challenge’.

On Reddit, where the challenges were shared, Redditor diugo88 came up with a set of “anti-challenges” designed to boost your self-esteem. These are the challenges that should be spread around:

·         Write on a white paper ‘I’m strong, I can do everything I want!’ for 50 times.
·         Take a walk listening some electroswing (parov stelar for instance)
·         Wake up at 10 am, open the window and listen the outside sounds thinking, ‘I’m happy to live’ many times.
·         Go see a sunset while listening some jazz (bossanova, coltrane for instance). Experience its beauty.
·         Try to cook some food you like, eat it with some friends\parents\others you like.
·         Wake up at 5.30 am, have a good breakfast and then go out watch your city waking up. No music here.
·         Try to talk with at least 5 different unknown people about something for at least 5 minutes each.
·         Try to talk with someone who does not like you and try to make him a friend.
·         Take a walk in the afternoon with some music.
·         Take a whole day to do what you like. Life is beautiful; don’t throw it away.
·         Spam these rules to other people.
·         Force yourself to talk with another gamer (or friend or person) about your problems.
·         Try to help another gamer with his/her problems. You can make the difference, you are special.
·         Take a walk with someone, talk about your hopes and desires, and ask about his/her hopes and dreams.
·         Repeat all the above points again.
·         You are ready for the last test. Think about your progress, write your feelings about all the steps previously addressed, and give it to a person who you think would appreciate it.
·         Live your life happily. You really do not need a curator to control you. You are free, you are special, remember it whenever you are sad and you feel no way out. I love you.

Be sensible; don’t let a stupid game destroy your life

If you look for it you will find it

Often times one gives up on his dreams once he has failed attempting it, a blogger loses interest in his blogs when he sees no views off his post, a wannabe actor will give up his dreams when he realizes that there are thousands like him struggling for the same thing, a entrepreneur would give up on his business idea after it has been rejected by some investors etc. The thing one needs to have is clear sight of his goals and not worry about the benefits of end result.

The Animals with questions....

In a recent court hearing, a bunch of pleas was filed by animal rights activists as well as a group of people seeking culling of stray dogs. A bench of Justices Dipak Misra and R Banumathi dismissed a plea that all stray dogs should be killed in view rising cases of dog bites over the years, even causing death of people. The bench called for a balanced approach on the issue. It said compassion should be shown towards stray dogs but at the same time, these animals could not be allowed to become a menace to the society.

This reminded me of the story of Baby Camel....

A baby camel had a habit of asking his mom a lot of questions. She didn’t entertain his questions usually. But one fine day she decided to answer her curious son’s queries.

Baby Camel: Mama why do I have this 3 toed feet?

Mother Camel: Well son,Son, camels are animals of the desert, when we trek across the desert your toes will help you to stay on top of the soft sand.

Baby Camel: Alright Mama. Then why do I have these great long eyelashes?

Mother Camel:  Desert have many sandstorms. These long curly eyelashes are there to keep the sand out of your eyes on the trips through the desert

Baby Camel: Oh I get it! But Mama why do I have these big humps on my back?

Mother Camel: Sometimes in the desert it can be hard to find food and water for days. For such times, the fat in the hump provides energy. The hump allows us to survive in the desert."

Baby Camel: That's great mom, so we have huge feet to stop us from sinking in sand and long eyelashes to keep the sand from our eyes and these humps to store water, but Mom ...

Mother Camel: Yes Son?

Baby Camel: Where is the desert and How does all this help here at the Zoo?

When these animals are taken out of their natural habitat and put in an artificial enclosure. Their body parts cease to be useful in this kind of habitat. These animals are not supposed to be kept in zoo for people's amusements they have a right to live for themselves.

As Humans we have tried to be in control of everything. The mass breeding of dogs is indicative of the state’s mismanagement & failure at implementing standard Animal Birth Control (ABC). Culling them is not a solution, Animals, like any creatures, don’t ask to be brought into this world and have a right to live in this world too.

If only Animals had the ability to speak, they would surely had a lot of questions for humans.

Sunset - An opportunity to reset

Every beginnings has come from something that's ended. Life will have difficulties but you will get opportunities every now and then, a time to sit back and live the moment and you will realize, it's not that bad and you can start afresh.

A Recycling Vending Machine that feeds Homeless dogs

A company in Turkey called Pugedon has created a vending machine that takes bottles deposited for recycling and dispenses food for the city’s stray dogs.

Inventor Engin Girgin believes that it’s a somewhat bizarre but effective way to kill two birds with one stone. Pugedon Company created the vending machine that feeds stray animals in return for people recycling bottles. The machine works because the profit from the recycled bottles covers the cost of the dog food that the machine dispenses while also being Eco-friendly as it works on solar power

The station has two insertion holes, one for plastic bottles, metal soda cans and carton containers and one for the water which the plastic bottles may contain. When a plastic bottle or can is dropped into the hole the unit releases some food to the feeding container below, while the water that is poured down the separate hole goes directly to a container below for the animals to drink.

Istanbul is known for its high number of stray dogs – some estimates say that there are as many as 150,000. Some locals love having the dogs around, who have adjusted so well to city life that they stop at traffic lights and walkways, but others want to get rid of them because of their aggression and their role as disease vectors. There were fears among residents that these food boxes may lead to parts of the city being flocked with packs of hungry dogs, but that has not been the case, as all dogs have their own territory, which they do not leave for any long time, even for food.

While it is one way of getting rid of garbage, there are certain concerns that come with it. Over here in India the same machine can make wonders. Vending machine that takes in garbage and gives out food for homeless people, this way we can get our city cleaned to a certain extent and feed the homeless in the same side of coin. Although there is a chance of the same unruly lazy homeless people breaking in the whole machine for more food. If could be supervised can help in not just cleaning the city or feeding the hunger but also providing a certain level of work to the homeless.

An Initiative worth trying!!

Momondo The DNA journey- A youtube video that takes your DNA to a surprise ride

About a Month back Momondo a travel site came up with a beautiful video, where a group of people from different backgrounds like race, countries, etc. were brought together for a DNA test. The video starts with people giving their opinions about what they feel about others or themselves and then asking them to take a DNA test. The result of the test constitute the second part, which has some shocking revelations and moments of the participants about how and what they feel after learning a part about themselves from the DNA result. This video through the magic of DNA testing is a commendable effort to prove the world that we are more alike than different.

The DNA Journey

A must watch video with a message that's sure to at least make you start thinking about it. Although the video from the travel site Momondo is trying to portray a message, there are reports that have questioned the authenticity of video with scientist claiming that there is no Standard to say a persons blood is 100% Indian or Danish or American, so how can you come up with percentages. Also some of the reports say that the people involved as participants in the video are actually bunch of actors.
So whether they are fake reactions or scripted, is that the question to be asked?
So it could all be fake, just acting, the reports done by the Travel site for its vested Interests. But is that the point that we are suppose to take from this video, the question we are supposed to ask. No! In the world filled with violence's all over and blame games actively running with it, the moment of realization is what could make us understand that we are all same. A moment to think that, Its the same red blood and that we are supposed to live like humans and not any Jew or Christian, Hindu or Muslim, they are religions meant to improve the meaning of our life, not destroy it.
Its your decision to join or not. But Understand the question it gives
Around 20 years back, Krantiveer was released with Nana patekar as the protagonists giving few of the best Dialogue performances ever on silver screen. One such moment includes him questioning a riot stricken person about his integrity, asking him the difference between bloods to describe religion. It had the similar message, about similar we are, and how we get triggered to fight one another because of few unwanted elements of society. watch it and relive the moment of the videos. And take a moment to think about it.

Protagonists or Antagonists: Walter White aka Heisenberg

Some actor are meant to bring life in to the fictional characters and make them feel like they exists for real. While the characters of fantasy series like Harry potter or LOTR are obviously Imaginary and can only be Imagined, there are some that borders on reality and possibility of existence. One such series is Breaking Bad that gives us a protagonists or antagonists, whichever way you call him, who, when confronted with eminent death, turns to illegal ways in order to secure his family's future but then started liking it.
From a Simple chemistry teacher 'Walter white' to Drug Kingpin 'Heisenberg'.

Walter White AKA Heisenberg

Breaking Bad is a TV series that focus on a character who after being diagnosed by the terminal cancer, the mild mannered school teacher gets turned in to a ruthless criminal mastermind and Drug lord. What started out as a quick money making route before dying for Walter White ended with him building an entire drug empire, so big that he himself states that it could be listed in Nasdaq. What's interesting and at the same time, disturbing about the character is, that as he gets deeper, he becomes more heartless, his fear from threats to his family are always dealt by him with someone's death. The pseudo name Heisenberg, becomes a known name around the Drug cartels or underworld, Such that although not everyone has seen the Heisenberg, the name stroked fear.
An Explanation or a threat to his wife's worries
Bryan Cranston's portrayal of Walter White is spot on, he makes you feel sorry and completely root for the guy. At the same time, he makes you doubt his morality like in scenes when Walter white aka Heisenberg is striking fear, even when he is talking to his own family or friends. Few such scenes are the ones against his wife, "I am not in Danger, Skyler. I Am the Danger. A guy opens the door and gets shot and you think that of me? NO! I am the one who Knocks!" or the one against his own lawyer, who wants to get out of the business and he replies,"You are out, when I say You are out" or the one in final part of the series against his own confronting DEA Brother-in-law,"...Thread Lightly." and many such iconic dialogues that has now become famous Quotes.
In short, Stay Out of my way

The show is critically acclaimed and so is the character, with Actor Bryan Cranston winning numerous award (total four Prime-time Emmy Awards from five seasons of shows) so is the show. What's interesting about the show is at the end it shows, 'Karma catches up with you eventually'.
Final confessions
Also the most interesting and to some extent influential part of the character or human behavior is, when a man is pushed to a brink of his end, the fear of being 'nothing' entire his life and failing his family can make him look for more, take risks in new ventures and try his best. And that is when he follows his heart and does what he feels he is really good at. But the thread of Right and Wrong is what holds him, and in case of Walter white he didn't care about the line. What went wrong with Walter white is he started to feel proud of work. Being the best in it, despite being provided with numerous opportunities to get out, he stays. As he admits it that he liked it and he felt alive.

There are many other such characters that are equally awesome and amazingly portrayed but for me, right now, Walter White with his trademark Black glass and Black hat with Black coat as Heisenberg, stands on top.
"Heisenberg?" - You are goddamn right

Why do we neglect our own safety so easily?

If you think about it Indians don't care about safety standards, most of the times the set parameters of safety for a company, vehicles, schools and other places are never met. As an Individuals itself people don't care of their own safety, which is evident if you see how people travel in local trains or how some bikers drive in traffic. Most of the people don't wear seat belts or helmets and the ones who do, do it to avoid fines rather than safety purposes.

So it should not come as a surprise, when Global new car assessment program (Global NCAP) came up with the following Statement, "The latest Indian crash test result in Delhi continue to disappoint with all five model rated as zero."

Maruti Suzuki celerio and Eeco, Renault Kwid and Hyundai Eon, were the cars that was tested and all of them scored a zero rating. Mahindra Scorpio- an all terrain SUV once termed as prime minister's Vechicle, was the fifth car and it disappointed too with zero rating.

The results of Five vechicles:

According to NCAP general secretary David Ward, a car must have 'A stable Body shell ' and  'atleast a Front Airbags' to be considered stable during crash.

HYUNDAI EON- NO AIRBAGS

MAHINDRA SCORPIO- NO AIRBAGS

MARUTI SUZUKI CELERIO- NO AIRBAGS

MARUTI SUZUKI EECO- NO AIRBAGS
RENAULT KWID (I)- NO AIRBAGS

Industry Experts are disappointed by Renaults as even their Airbag- fitted version failed the test.

On Renaults kwid, this is what the NCAP said, "It is very surprising that a manufacturer like Renault introduced the Kwid initially lacking this essential feature. Global NCAP stongly believe that no manufacturer anywhere in the world should be developing new models that are clearly so Sub-standard."

It looks like even the manufacturers are avoiding the safety parameters with such results. Its sad that one of leading automobile markets in the world has such a poor standards of safety, despite having a world's highest death rate in road fatalities. One of the reason is lack of legislation or laws about testing vehicles. Lets hope that such news could bring about the required change in mindset of people in searching for a low maintenance and high efficiency cars with the required safety considerations.
