Host India are grouped alongside USA,
Colombia and Ghana and will play all their games at New Delhi as per the
official draw conducted in Mumbai on Friday evening
It
will be India’s first FIFA event both as a organiser and Participant across all
age groups. Numbered as A1, India are slated to play all their home matches at
the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi against USA (A2) Colombia (A3) and
Ghana (A4) that make up Group A.
The
Luis Norton de Matos coached side will open their campaign against USA on the
opening day of the tournament on 6th October, this will then be followed by a
game against Colombia and Ghana on 9th and 12th October respectively.
Earlier
stated to play all their games at D.Y. Patil stadium, Navi Mumbai, FIFA then
changed it to National capital New Delhi on the behest of Indian government,
which hasn’t gone down well with most football fans of India. D.Y. Patil now
host group B teams i.e. Mali, New Zealand, Paraguay and Turkey.
One
of the favourites for the tournament, Brazil, have been drawn in Group D
alongside Spain, North Korea and Niger while Germany are placed in group C
alongside Costa Rica, Iran and Guinea. England are placed in Group F against Iraq,
Mexico and Chile while in Group E it is France, Japan Honduras and New
Caledonia.
The
24 participating teams have been divided into six groups of four. The top two
teams from each group and the next four best 3rd placed team’s
progress to the round of 16 knock-out games.
